Dr. Alexis Schulman
DVM, Practice Owner, Medical Director
Dr. Alexis Schulman opened Flamingo Road Animal Hospital on August 18, 2020 as a culmination of many years of hard work and dreams of a new concept in veterinary care. Born in Los Angeles, California to Peruvian/Dominican parents, Dr. Schulman grew up with the sense of responsibility for caring for animals, nature, and the ocean. Her family instilled a sense of respect for the world around her, and she knew she wanted to care for animals before she even knew what a veterinarian was. Dr. Schulman grew up in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Florida, and has always had a passion for animal welfare. From a very young age, her Godmother (Aunt Pola) and Grandmother as well as her father taught her to love and care for animals and nature.
Dr. Schulman went on to attend Universidad Nacional Henriquez Urena where she earned a BS in Animal Science with a Pre-Veterinary track in 1979. She then stayed to complete veterinary school and graduated in 1983. Her professional interests include preventative medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine, exotic animal care, surgery, and dentistry. She is a member of the AVMA and VECCS.
When asked what the most important part of her job was, Dr. Schulman said "As a clinician, accurately diagnosing diseases and providing the best treatment for my patients. Improving my patients' quality of life and happiness. I hope to strengthen the human/animal bond between my patients and their caregivers and educate owners to better understand the animals they love."
At home, Dr. Schulman has two daughters, Stacie and Tori. Stacie is a Marine Biologist currently pursuing a career as a veterinarian. Tori just graduated with a BS in Public Health. They have three pets, Mojo is a Hawaiian long haired chihuahua, Olli is a miniature pinscher, and Pisco is a Maltese. Dr. Schulman likes to spend her free time going to the beach, beach combing, sailing, hiking mountains, watching movies, and reading when she has the time. She also enjoys mentoring other veterinarians through chat groups.
